Amazonite Butterfly — Teal Green Carved Wings on a Metal Stand

A pair of butterfly wings cut from amazonite and set onto a slim metal stand with a shaped body and curled antennae.

Amazonite is the soft blue green one, and this pair is cut so the color carries evenly across both wings, with paler clouding through the middle and a few chalky white patches out near the tips. The outside edge steps down each wing in scallops and points. The face of each wing is cut with long fanned lines that read as feathering from a few feet away and as tool work up close, and the whole surface is finished smooth.

The wings lift off the stand, so it arrives as three pieces and goes back together in about a second.

Put it where light crosses the wings rather than hitting them flat on. Raking light finds the fanned cuts and the scalloped edge, and the pale clouding in the stone separates from the deeper teal. Straight front light flattens the whole thing into one green shape, which is the one way to waste it. A windowsill, the end of a bookshelf, a bathroom counter, anywhere the light angle changes during the day.

Amazonite has been handed around for a long time as the stone for saying the thing. The usual reading is courage of the plain spoken kind, the nerve to finish the sentence you started, and it gets paired with the throat more often than any other blue green stone. Butterflies carry their own meaning and everybody already knows it, the thing that changed shape and came out able to fly. Put those together and you get the piece people buy for somebody in the middle of a change rather than somebody out the other side of one, which is most of why these sell at all.
