The bands run in soft horizontal belts, and the effect is closer to a sky than to a stone. A wide blue grey band wraps the middle, pale and cool, with fine dark speckling scattered through it. Above and below it the stone lightens into cream and pearl, then warms into tan and soft brown toward the base. Everything is layered flat, one belt over another, in the order it was laid down.

One face carries a large soft brown zone with a paler ring around it, the place where the layering swirled instead of running straight. It is smooth to the touch like the rest of the sphere. Nothing on this piece is raised or crystalline, it is polished the whole way around.

Jasper is opaque, and that is what tells you it is jasper rather than agate. Hold this one up to a bright window and no light comes through it anywhere. It just goes on being quietly beautiful in reflected light instead.
