Six inches of banded jasper, cut and polished so the layers travel the whole way up the piece. Warm sand and cream trade off with a soft blue, and the blue drifts rather than stripes. It thins out in places, pools thick in others, and takes over completely at the point.

Look closely at the pale bands and you will find fine dark markings scattered through them, the branching kind that mineral rich water leaves behind as it works through sediment. There are small open pockets in the layers as well, natural voids that tell you this stone was built slowly, one deposit at a time.

One line runs down a face and reads at first glance like a crack. It is not. It is part of the formation, a seam in the layering that was there long before the piece was cut, and it is stable.
