A small piece of reef, cut and polished so you can look straight into it.

One face is polished to a soft slate blue, and the coral's own structure reads right across it in fine rings and dots, the tiny chambers where the colony once lived. A large round polyp opens near the middle like a little sunburst. The other side has been left alone, chalky and cream and still porous, exactly the texture the reef built. It comes to a point at the top and stands up on its own.

At 3.5 inches tall it fits where a bigger piece cannot, a bookshelf, a desk, a bathroom counter, the sill above a kitchen sink.
