Glassy, champagne colored calcite crystals sit on a bed of tiny quartz needles that catch the light like frost, all of it grown over a dark gray matrix that makes the pale crystals stand out. The largest calcite crystal is clear enough to see the growth lines running through it, and there are a dozen smaller ones scattered across the face, some clear, some milky, tucked in among the sparkle.

Turn it over and the back is plain gray stone with a small pocket of crystals hiding inside it, so it reads as a lump of rock from one side and a cabinet specimen from the other. It was collected in Fujian Province, China, a region known for glassy calcite and quartz combinations like this one. It comes on its own clear acrylic pin stand, labeled with the mineral name and origin, which holds the cluster up off the shelf so light gets in behind the crystals.

The part you cannot see in daylight is the best part. Under a UV light the calcite glows a soft pink while the quartz stays dark, and the whole cluster turns into something else entirely. A small UV flashlight is a fun thing to keep beside it.
