A wide polished slab, ten inches across, cut from banded aqua stone and set upright in a clear acrylic stand. The face reads like water seen from above, soft turquoise and powder blue laid down in long wavy layers, with cream white bands and rust and tan seams threading through the whole length of it. Scattered across the surface are small open pockets where the layers never closed, some of them lined with tiny crystal. The outline is left natural, an irregular angular shape with a stepped shoulder at one end and a point at the other, and the face is polished smooth while the back and edges keep their cut texture.
Caribbean calcite is the trade name this material sells under. It is a banded mix of blue aragonite and calcite, and it has nothing to do with the Caribbean.
Size: about 10 inches wide and about 4.5 inches tall
Weight: 1 pound 3.8 ounces
It comes with the clear acrylic stand in the photographs.
One of a kind, exactly the piece in the photos.
At ten inches this is a piece of furniture more than a specimen, so give it room. It wants to be seen face on from across a space, a mantel, a wide shelf, the back of a sideboard, somewhere the whole length of the banding can be read at once. Light from the front flattens it, light from one side picks out every ridge and pocket, so set a lamp off to one side of it rather than above.
Blue aragonite is kept for the things that need saying out loud. It has a long association with steady breath and an even voice, and it turns up again and again as a stone for people who talk for a living or who are working their way back toward saying what they mean. Calcite banded through it is read as the patient half, the part that asks you to take the long view while you find the words. Many keep a piece like this where they work or where they talk, a desk, a studio, the room where the hard conversations happen, less as a charm than as a reminder that the layers took their time and so can you.
