The apple that never goes brown on the shelf.
Carved from banded onyx and polished all the way around, with a solid brass leaf and stem set into the top. Cream and pale sage bands run in soft rings around the body, and rust red seams cut across them where iron settled into the layers as the stone formed.
The front has a translucent window. Hold it toward a lamp or a bright window and the light travels right through that patch, turning it warm apricot and gold from the inside.
Small enough to sit in one hand and heavy enough to hold papers down on a windy desk. It stands on its own flat base with no stand needed.
A note on the name. Stone sold as onyx like this is banded calcite, not the black and white onyx that belongs to the quartz family. That is not a downgrade, it is simply what it is, and the soft translucence and the ringed banding are exactly why calcite gets carved into pieces like this one.
2 x 2.5 inches, 11.8 oz.
Calcite is the bright one, the stone people reach for when they want a room and a mind to feel clear and awake rather than heavy. It is associated with fresh starts, with learning, and with the kind of energy that makes a task feel possible at the beginning of the day rather than at the end of it. Banded calcite carries that with an extra note of patience, the slow layered growth of it standing in for progress that happens a little at a time and adds up. Given as an apple, on a desk where someone teaches or studies or writes, it is a small daily nod to the person doing the work.
