A pair of carved butterfly wings in chevron amethyst, set on a slim metal stand so they open the way a butterfly holds them when it lands.
Chevron amethyst is the one with the stripes. Deep purple amethyst layered through with bands of milky white quartz, and because these wings are cut as a matched pair from the same piece, the banding runs out from the body in a V on both sides and mirrors itself across the middle. The carving follows the edge of each wing in scallops and points, and the surface is polished smooth enough to feel the color change under your thumb.
The wings lift off the stand. They sit in the arms rather than being fixed, so you can take them down, hold them, pass them around, and set them back in a few seconds. The stand is included.
One of a kind, exactly the piece in the photos.
Put it where it gets backlit. Near a window, in front of a lamp, on a shelf with light behind it, the white bands brighten and the purple deepens and the whole pair reads like stained glass. Flat front light makes it look like a solid purple carving, which is the one way to waste it. It is also the sort of thing people pick up without asking, so a spot within reach is better than a high shelf.
Amethyst is the one almost everyone meets first, and it stays in the collection for a reason. It has been kept for a clear head and an even temper for as long as anyone has written these things down, and the chevron kind, with its white bands cutting through, gets read as the working version of that, amethyst with something structural running through it. Butterflies carry their own meaning on top, the obvious one, the thing that changed shape and came out able to fly. Together they tend to be given rather than bought, and they tend to be given at the moment somebody is partway through the change rather than after it.
