From behind it is nothing, a round blue green cobble you would step over on a beach. Then you turn it around and the whole front opens into a cave, and the cave is full of emerald. Deep, wet looking green, glassy, every crystal standing exactly where it grew in the dark. Nobody arranged this. It sat sealed inside a rock in the Congo for longer than there have been people to be amazed by it, and then it opened.

That green is not dye and it is not a coating. It is copper. Dioptase is a copper silicate, and the colour goes all the way through the crystal because the copper is the crystal. It only forms in a thin oxidised layer above a copper deposit, in small hidden pockets, which is why it comes from a short list of mines and why a piece like this exists in small numbers and then does not exist again.

Look at the outside too. The blue green skin is chrysocolla, the rust and cream is the host rock, and the round shape is the ground's work, not a machine's. Nothing here was cut, polished, dyed or improved. It is exactly as the earth handed it over, which is rarer in this trade than most people realise.

It rests on its own curve with the cave facing out, and it is small enough to pick up, which you will, constantly, because it changes completely depending on where the light is.

Dioptase is the stone people reach for when something needs to be set down at last. Its whole reputation is the deep heart rather than the romantic one: old grief, the ache carried so long it started to feel like furniture, the forgiveness that is really for yourself. It is not a bright, cheerful energy. It is the quiet one that sits with you while something finally softens, which is why it turns up so often in the hands of people doing real inner work rather than collecting pretty things.
