This is the inside of a geode, and it is crystal on both faces. Thousands of tiny amethyst points cover the face, so fine that the surface reads as one dark sheet until the light hits it, and then every crystal catches at a slightly different angle and the whole thing goes to glitter. The color sits deep in the smoky range, charcoal and violet gray rather than bright purple, which is what the trade calls black amethyst.

Across the face there are paler botryoidal domes, rounded mounds where the crystal grew in bubbles instead of flat, and they hold the light differently from the rest. The outer edge is the geode's own rind, a pale gray crust of finer crystal that runs all the way around like frost on a window.

It stands on the clear acrylic easel shown, which keeps the face upright and out of the way of the light. It is small enough for a desk or a shelf edge and heavy enough in the hand to feel like a real piece of rock.

WHAT THIS STONE IS FOR

Amethyst is the one nearly everybody meets first, and there is a reason it kept its reputation. It is associated with a calm mind, with sleep, and with cutting through mental noise, and it has been the traditional stone of clear thinking and sobriety for a very long time.

The dark amethysts are spoken of a little differently from the bright purple ones. Where pale amethyst is read as airy and opening, the near black material is described as protective and settling, a stone for holding a boundary rather than expanding past it. A NOTE ON NATURAL STONE

This came out of a geode rather than a mold, so expect variation. You will find iron staining in warm rust patches near the edge, small gaps where crystals are missing, an uneven natural outline, and color that shifts from near black to pale gray across the face. The crystal points are sharp and fine, so they will catch on cloth. Those are not flaws. They are the evidence.
