Floating Druzy Quartz Cube — Boxwork Epimorph Specimen with Crystal Lined Hollows, Raw Sparkling Quartz, Rare Collector Mineral

This one is a cast of crystals that are no longer here.

Something bladed grew in this rock first, flat crystals crossing each other in fans. Quartz crystallised over every surface of them, a fine sparkling skin. Then, at some point, water took the bladed mineral away and left the quartz behind, still holding the shape. What you are holding is the negative space. The walls are where the gaps used to be, and the hollows are where the crystals used to be, and every one of those hollows is lined with tiny quartz points that catch the light when you turn it.

Mineralogists call this an epimorph. It is uncommon, and it is the sort of thing that gets picked up and turned over by everyone who visits.

It was cut to balance on one corner, so it stands tipped and looks like it is hovering just above the surface. That is deliberate, and it is the thing people notice before they notice anything else. Turn it and the lattice reads differently every time.

WHAT THIS STONE IS FOR

Quartz is the stone people reach for first, and the reason is that it does not specialise. It is associated with clarity, with amplification, and with holding an intention steady rather than pushing it in a particular direction. Druzy quartz, the tiny crystal coating you can see inside these hollows, carries the same associations in a gentler and more diffuse way.

There is a nice thing to sit with in a piece like this. It is a record of something that is gone, kept perfectly by what grew around it. People who like stones for their meanings tend to find their own use for that.

As a raw specimen it does not need a stand or a shelf of company. It works alone on a desk, a windowsill, or a stack of books, and it rewards being picked up.

A NOTE ON NATURAL STONE

This came out of the ground rather than a mold, so expect natural variation. You will find open hollows, thin fragile walls, iron staining in warm orange patches, and darker mineral shadows inside the quartz. The crystal surfaces are sharp in places because they were left exactly as they grew. Those are not flaws. They are the evidence.
