Hundreds of tiny spheres, and the light finds almost all of them.

That is the thing about this piece. It is not a stone with one sparkly patch, the glitter runs right across her. Most of those little lavender bubbles are faced with microscopic crystal, so when the light moves, hundreds of separate points catch and let go at once. A few of the spheres are smooth and stay quiet, which is how you know nothing here was coated. Tip her a few degrees and a completely different set of them fires. Photographs get a fraction of it. Grape agate does not look like a rock. It looks like something that grew, a cluster of pale lavender bubbles crowded against each other, some the size of a pea and some barely a pinhead, packed so tightly that the entire surface is curves. Under a lamp at night it is quietly beautiful. In a patch of daylight it is genuinely hard to stop touching.

It is not really agate at all. The trade name stuck, but this is botryoidal chalcedony, and the bubble form is what happens when silica gel sets around thousands of separate nucleation points instead of in flat bands. Each of those points became a sphere, and most of them grew a crystal skin. That is the sparkle, and that is also why it comes from essentially one place on earth: a single mineral district in Indonesia, first brought out in quantity only in the last decade or so. A young discovery and a finite one.

The colour is soft, a grey lavender rather than a grape purple, which is what the good material actually looks like in daylight. Deeper violet pieces exist and most of them have been dyed. This one has not.

Grape agate has picked up a reputation as a stone of clear thinking and calm attention, the kind of quiet that comes from many small things sitting in order rather than from silence. People who work with it tend to keep it near where they think.

The cluster form carries that idea further. It is many, held together, and the whole is prettier than any single sphere in it. There are worse things to keep on a desk.
