This is a lot of lapis. A polished heart five and a half inches across, close to a pound and three quarters of stone, in the deep royal blue the stone is famous for, with bands of soft white calcite sweeping across it on the diagonal and a fine glitter of pyrite scattered through the blue. It comes with the gold metal display stand in the photographs, so it stands up on its own and shows its face from across a room.

The blue is the mineral lazurite, and the depth of it is what separates good lapis from the rest. This piece runs saturated and dark, close to ultramarine, and it is that color all the way through rather than a coating on the surface. The white bands are calcite, the pale host rock lapis grows in, and they give the heart its stripes. The gold flecks are pyrite, real metallic sulfide, which is why they catch light the way sequins do and why the stone was once ground into the most expensive blue paint in the world.

Both faces are polished. The back carries a broad pale band with a soft swirl of white and gold through it, so the heart is worth turning around now and then. The edge is smoothly rounded. The stand is a simple brushed gold ring base with a slim post and two small arms that cradle the heart at its lower edges, and the heart lifts out of it whenever you want to hold it.

Lapis lazuli has been treasured for something like six thousand years, and the associations that follow it are among the oldest attached to any stone. It is kept as a stone of truth and clear speaking, the one people reach for when they want to say the real thing plainly. It is tied to wisdom and inner knowing, to the kind of insight that comes from being honest with yourself first, and it is a long standing favorite for study, writing, and any work that asks for a clear head. Ancient cultures buried it with the people they loved most and painted the robes of their most sacred figures with it, so it carries an air of the precious and the protected.

The heart form brings all of that home. A heart is read as love in every sense, love given, love received, love for yourself, and a stone heart is one of the most natural gifts there is. In lapis it leans toward honest, deep, steady affection, the kind that speaks up and keeps its word. On its stand it makes a fine centerpiece for a dresser, a desk, a mantel, or a bedside table, and a memorable anniversary, wedding, or Valentine gift.
