Most geodes give you a pocket. This one gives you the whole inside of the stone.

A tall agate nodule, cut open down its best face and polished until the outside reads as a deep glossy black that goes almost to a mirror. The entire front is hollow, and the hollow is filled with soft pale druzy, gray white with the faintest blue in it, grown in big rounded lobes that lean and press against one another the way clouds pile up. A fine white band follows the whole rim where the black shell meets the opening, drawn as cleanly as if someone had lined it. Low on one side a seam of cream crust runs through, the last piece of the rough nodule left in place. The bottom is cut flat. The agate is from Uruguay.

Size: about 8.25 inches tall and about 5.25 inches wide
Weight: 7 pounds 8 ounces

One of a kind, exactly the piece in the photos.

Here is why you want it. Almost nothing you can buy for a room earns its place from across that room, and this does. The black shell reads as a dark silhouette from the doorway, and because the cave is pale and faces out, it catches whatever light is going and holds it, so the piece looks lit from the inside while the outside stays dark. People notice it before they know what it is. Then they come close, and up close it is a completely different object, all texture, hundreds of crystal faces on those rounded lobes, every one of them catching at a slightly different angle. A thing that works at ten feet and at ten inches is rare, and that is what you are buying.

It is also the largest agate geode in the shop. The next biggest is seven inches, and nothing else in the Uruguayan agates comes near this one for the size of the opening. It was the largest piece the Uruguayan wholesaler had. That is the part worth sitting with, because a stone like this is not cut to order. The nodule either comes out of the ground that size with a hollow that big, or it does not, and most of them do not. At seven and a half pounds it has real heft in the hands and stays exactly where it is set, which matters at this scale.

Give it a surface it can own on its own. A mantel, a console, the end of a long sideboard, at eye level or just below where someone walking in meets it face on. Light it from one side rather than overhead, because side light runs across the lobes and lifts every one of them, while light from straight above flattens the whole cave out.

Agate is the steady one. It is the stone people keep for the long middle of things, the stretch that is not a crisis and not a triumph, when what is needed is to simply keep going at the same pace. Banded agate has long been read as a record of patience, each layer laid down in its own time and none of them hurried, and it is kept for grounding, for steadiness of temper, and for the slow building of confidence that cannot be rushed. A hollow one is read differently again. The cave is the part people respond to, the idea of a hard dark outside holding something bright and unguarded, and a piece at this size tends to end up in the room where a household actually gathers rather than somewhere private. It is a stone that gets lived with rather than kept.
