A big, heavy ocean jasper sphere, just under four inches across and very nearly three pounds in the hand. The surface is deep forest green and near black, printed all over with the pale ringed orbs that give orbicular jasper its name, some tight as a coin, some spreading wide and soft. Cream and sage bands wander across one face. Rust and honey run through the openings.

The best part of this one is what the polish did not close. Several small pockets sit open in the surface, lined with tiny sparkling crystal and edged in tan and cream. You can tip it toward a window and watch them catch. That is the piece of the stone that was still hollow when the cutting stopped, and it is the reason this sphere reads as a specimen and not just a ball.

Ocean jasper is a trade name rather than a mineral name. It is a banded, orbicular chalcedony from the coast of Madagascar, close kin to agate, and the deposits that made these patterns are worked out, so what is above ground is what there is.

Crystal lore says ocean jasper carries the temperament of the tide it was named for. It is the stone of patient good cheer, of coming back around, of letting the small daily things rise and fall without gripping any of them too hard. Those ringed orbs are said to hold a soft, circling kind of joy, the sort that turns up quietly rather than arriving all at once. Keepers reach for it when they want to feel steadier in a busy stretch, to speak more kindly, or simply to be reminded that everything moves in cycles and the next one is already on its way. A sphere sends that outward in every direction at once, which is why so many people put one where the whole room can feel it.

This is the exact sphere in the photographs, the only one like it, and it arrives on the clear acrylic ring stand shown.

Natural stone will always vary. The pockets, the orb pattern and the banding are the record of how this piece formed and are part of the character of the piece rather than flaws.
