This is a big sphere. Three and a half inches across and just over two pounds, heavy enough that you carry it with both hands and it stays exactly where you set it down. The color runs from deep grape violet through to a purple so dark it reads black at the edges, and laid across all of it are broad plates of mica that throw a soft silver sheen when the light moves.

That sheen is the whole character of the piece. Lepidolite grows in stacked sheets, so a sphere cut through them exposes those plates at every angle at once. Under a lamp they light up in patches and long cross hatched blades, pale champagne and pink silver against the violet, and then you turn the ball a few degrees and a different set catches instead. It does not hold still.

There are near black ribbons running through the body where the mica sits edge on to the surface, and paler frosted zones where the plates grew coarser. Some areas take a glassy polish and some stay softly matte, because the mineral itself is not uniform.

WHAT THIS STONE IS FOR

Lepidolite is the lithium stone. That is literal geology rather than a metaphor: lithium sits in its chemistry, and the crystal community has never let that fact go. It has become the piece people reach for when the goal is to come down off a hard day rather than to power through one.

A NOTE ON NATURAL STONE

Lepidolite is a soft mineral, softer than glass and much softer than quartz, so this sphere asks for a little more care than a hard stone does. Keep it off the floor, keep it out of water, and set it down rather than rolling it. You will find fine lines where the mica plates meet, small pits where a plate sat proud of the surface, and patches where the polish reads matte instead of glassy. Those are not flaws. They are the record of how it grew, and they are the reason you can see the mica structure at all.
