A quiet little ritual in a box. This is the set for the end of a long day, the one you open when the house has finally gone still and the only thing left on the list is you.
The centerpiece is a rose quartz face gua sha, cut in a heart shape with a soft scalloped edge, polished smooth so it glides. Rose quartz is cool to the touch and warms slowly in your hand, and the pale pink of this one has the cloudy, milky look that the best rose quartz always does.
Beside it is a gemstone roller, a glass roller bottle filled with organic jojoba oil over a bed of tumbled gemstone chips. Roll a little onto your face and neck before the gua sha and the stone moves like it is on silk. Every box gets a different stone in the roller, so yours is a small surprise, and the photographs show one of them.
Two more stone tools round out the set. A long black bian stone body scraper, matte and substantial, cut in the classic S curve that follows the neck, the shoulders, the arms and the back. This is the body tool, not a face tool, and bian stone is the fine grained black stone that body scraping has been done with in China for centuries. And a smooth white jade teardrop point, small enough to tuck into a palm, for the places that need a slower touch, the temples, the brow, the hollow under the cheekbone. White jade is the trade name for this milky.
Everything nests in wood shavings inside our bamboo keepsake box with the Gems & Stems tree engraved on the lid, so it arrives ready to give. No wrapping, no assembly, just a box you open and exhale into.
How to use each piece
The gemstone roller comes first. Roll the oil onto clean skin, face, neck and along the collarbone, a few passes each. It only takes a little. The oil is what lets the stones glide instead of drag, so never gua sha on dry skin.
The rose quartz heart is the face gua sha. Hold it nearly flat against the skin, a gentle angle, light pressure, and sweep outward and upward, always in one direction. Start at the center of the chin and follow the jaw to the ear. Then from the side of the nose across the cheek to the temple. Then from the brow up into the hairline. Three to five slow strokes per spot, both sides. The scalloped edge is for the jawline and the brow bone, the smooth curve is for the cheeks. Two or three minutes is plenty.
The bian stone S curve is the body scraper, never for the face. The long inside curve fits the side of the neck and the top of the shoulder, the outer curve fits the upper back and the arms. Use more oil here and a firmer hand than on the face, long strokes toward the heart, and let the weight of the stone do the work. This is the one to reach for after a day at a desk or a long drive.
The white jade point is for the small places. Rest the rounded tip on a spot that holds tension, the temple, the point between the brows, the notch under the cheekbone, the hinge of the jaw, and hold with gentle pressure for a slow breath or two, then move to the next spot. Warm it in your hand first. This is the tool to keep on the nightstand.
Rinse the stones in warm water with a little mild soap after each use, dry them, and put them back in the box. Stone can chip if dropped on a hard surface.
What the ritual gives you
Gua sha is an old practice, a few unhurried minutes of moving a smooth stone across the skin, and people who keep it up talk about the same things. Skin that feels fresh and looks brighter afterward. A face that feels lighter and less puffy first thing in the morning. A jaw and a neck that let go of the day. And a pause that belongs to nobody else, which is the part that keeps them coming back. The stones stay cool against warm skin, and that coolness alone is a small pleasure worth the two minutes.
Rose quartz is the heart stone, the one people reach for when they want to be gentler with themselves. It is read as a stone of self love and quiet forgiveness, of letting your shoulders come down from your ears. Bian stone is prized in Chinese tradition as a grounding, steadying stone, the one for the body when the body has been carrying too much. White jade is read as a stone of calm and clarity, cool and composed, which is exactly the feeling you want at the temples at the end of a long day.
Why organic jojoba oil
Jojoba is pressed from the seeds of a desert shrub and it is the oil we chose on purpose. It is not really an oil at all but a liquid wax, and its makeup is unusually close to the skin's own sebum, so skin drinks it in instead of sitting under a greasy film. It is light, it has almost no scent of its own, it does not go rancid the way many plant oils do, and it suits most skin, including skin that is fussy about everything else. Organic means the plants were grown without synthetic pesticides, and this oil is unscented, so what you smell is nothing at all. It gives the stones the perfect glide and leaves skin soft, not shiny.
The product photographs show the set you will receive, with one of the gemstone rollers pictured. The stone in your roller may differ.
