Most sodalite comes out of the ground blue and white and stops there, which is lovely and also very common. This one has rust orange iron threading through the white matrix in a wide curving band across one face, and it is simply beautiful to look at. Sellers call this look Sunset Sodalite. What it actually is, plainly, is sodalite that formed alongside iron rich material, and the iron stained the pale matrix as it moved through. Nothing added. Nothing dyed. The color is a record of where the rock has been.

Deep denim blue over most of the surface, mottled and cloudy the way good sodalite always is. White matrix breaking through in drifts. The orange threading over the white, thin as a pen line in places and pooled in others. It is polished on every side, so the pattern keeps changing as you turn it, and you will turn it.

Just under 3 inches across, a little over a pound and a quarter. It fills a palm properly. The clear acrylic stand in the photos comes with it.

Sodalite has been called the Stone of Logic for a very long time, and the name stuck because it points at something real about how people use it. It belongs to the throat, associated in tradition with saying the true thing plainly, and to the third eye, associated with the quieter knowing that arrives before you have language for it. Those two rarely sit together. Most stones are asked to be one or the other, the clear head or the open channel. Sodalite is the one people reach for when the answer has to be both correct and kind.

Writers have kept it on desks for generations. So have people who teach, people who negotiate, and anyone whose work is really the careful arrangement of words. The tradition holds that it settles a racing mind without dulling it, that it makes a little room around the thought underneath the noise. If you have ever known exactly what you meant and heard it come out wrong anyway, this is the stone that folklore points you toward.

The orange changes the conversation. Iron is a grounding presence in nearly every tradition that names it, the element of blood and earth and staying where you are. So this sphere carries the cool blue clarity of sodalite with a warm line of iron drawn straight through the middle of it. A stone that thinks clearly and keeps its feet on the floor while it does. That is a good pairing, and it is not one you can go out and choose. The earth either did it or it did not.
