It is a lead arsenate chloride that forms these distinctive barrel-shaped crystals in shades of yellow, olive, and gold, usually found in the oxidation zones of old lead and silver mines. It is uncommon, it is beautiful, and it has a quiet kind of drama that grows on you the longer you look at it.

This specimen has a broad face of yellow-green mimetite crystals covering the front of a natural gossan matrix. The crystals are densely packed and textured, with that slightly translucent, resinous quality that makes mimetite so distinctive under light. The back shows the raw host rock, a rough brown matrix that tells you exactly where this piece came from, deep in the earth where lead mineralization meets air and water and starts to transform into something unexpected.
